About Me

Shannon Galea

As the first female athlete to participate in both summer and winter European Championships for Malta, I am invested in supporting the development of sport in Malta. As a former softball athlete and jumping into sliding sports as a skeleton athlete, it has been an honour to see these two sports grow.As a multi-sport athlete, aside from softball and skeleton, I was a distinguished collegiate athlete in the sports of squash, rowing and track and field. These experiences enabled me to follow my passion for sport by becoming a secondary Health and Physical educator as well as a group fitness trainer for F45.
I was fortunate enough to experience various sport systems around the world while playing professional softball and coaching national team level talent internationally for 7-years (National sport federations in NL, IT, MT, AUS, NZ and BEL).
Growing up with my Maltese heritage closely intact through my father and grandparents, I knew there was still so much to learn when it came to my heritage. My first visit to meet family was in 2013, which is where I established a working relationship with regional coaches on developing the sport of softball. In 2016, Malta became European Cup Champions in Most, Czech which enabled this little team to gain attention towards female sport initiatives. In 2021, our young ladies qualified for their first-ever major championship. I attended as an athlete and coach mentor in the WBSC World Cup Qualifier and European Championship in Barcelona, Spain and saw first-hand how these young athletes took their sport to the next level. It was simply inspiring to see all their hard work and dedication for the past decade come to life.As I compete in my first World Cup season with the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and the IOC's Olympic Solidarity scholarship funding, we hope that this is the beginning to give others the opportunity to experience high-performance sport internationally, by wearing the Maltese flag. Jumping away from the sand and sun and in much colder temperatures, we hope to promote the growth of winter sport. I am excited to bring the ice to this humble little island. If you want to learn more or support our new federation through charitable donations, click the link below to connect with our team. I have also included a link to my photography page where you can donate via a print purchase and receive a small gift in return.Thank you for your time and support!

On my free time, I enjoy writing music and doing photography (Specifically, landscape and sport).Musically, I am far from anything of a paid artist, but I do enjoy dabbling in various genres and playing a few instruments (Piano, uke and guitar). In particular, wedding marches and lullabies for children are somehow the genres I landed in. Some of my written songs are compilations with various themes intertwined, giving off a cinematic vibe. I had the honour of writing pieces for weddings and playing at weddings for friends. There is nothing more special than being asked to write music for the love story of your closest people. My passion for music is simply just that and I enjoy seeing what I can create. That's as good as it gets for me and my little home studio in Montreal, Quebec. As for photography, thanks to my career in sport that took me around the world. Over the years, I shared my travel stories and adventures through my lens. Just like Picasso, we all have to start somewhere and when I look back at photos from 10 years ago, I cringe at what I thought was decent. As I learned from the industries best in sport/events and fashion, while infusing my flare and honing in on my own creative style, I enjoy capturing moments behind the scenes.I have attended 2 Paralympic Games and 1 Parapan American Games as a sport photographer by supporting media outlets on the content side. Sharing athlete's stories and capturing some incredible moments of their life's hard work is a complete rush that is filled with awe. Not many opportunities give you the best seats in the house that makes for celebrating movement and the human spirit, frame by frame. On the flip side, my love for travel and seeking summit views and hiking has enabled me to take my photography to the next level. Weather windows and Mother Nature can pleasantly surprise you with some of the most amazing views to capture as you relish in your journey to get to the top. Like running, a hiker's high is invigorating. My creative outlets are what "slow me down," while living life on the go, so catch me if you can and enjoy some snaps and songs.

Creative Work

Sport for Development

Sport has the power to inspire our youth. It's a vehicle for change; it creates synergies to all spheres of health and wellness that play an integral role to society and culture.10 years ago, I arrived on the island for my first official visit to see family and connect with the softball community. Not realizing how much work there was to be done fundamentally, I instantly connected regional coaches to the broader European softball and NCAA coaching communities to create collaborative learning and development opportunities to help bring elite sport to their youth.Today, this program has made waves towards building more opportunities for women in sport and giving them the tools to believe that they too deserve to play. I am excited for what the future holds as there is a much needed shift within the Maltese sport culture.

Where are you from and why do you have a tan in December? A small humorous touch that always fuelled my curiosities and my why to learning more about my Maltese heritage. With a love for all things sun, sea and Mediterranean food, I soon learned that going to school and telling people you ate octopus on the regular, (Made by Nanna of course) was not the typical conversation of a 4 year-old kindergartener.Spoiled by all things that Canada has to offer and our beautiful four seasons of change, I was lucky to grow up in a home that celebrated 2 cultural backgrounds. Having a deep love and respect for my grandparents a.ka. Nannu and Nanna, who left Malta to start their life in Canada, I grew up learning all the cultural traditions and incredible history this little rock in the middle of the Mediterranean has to offer.I am grateful to have connected with my extended family in Australia and Malta who've helped shape my answer to the question, "But where are you from?"
